Shanur- How is genre conveyed in Kidulthood

The film opening we watched was Kidulthood. Kidulthood falls under Teen drama and crime.  Teen drama has a lot of crime involved, the actors and actresses are teenagers themselves. In most teen dramas there are a lot of gang violence. There are drugs and sex involved. Kidulthood in the opening scene has a lot of these activities happening in the playground.

The opening scene of Kidulthood is set in the school playground, they are all wearing school uniform. This shows the film will be about teens. There are also some scenes of a boy playing football, this can be associated with teens as they watch and play football. Everyone in the playground is in uniform except one, who is wearing normal casual clothes, which includes a hoody. Hoodies are in fashion for teen boys. Teen boys are always wearing hoodies, its teen fashion. This also shows Kidulthood will be teen drama. The boy with the hoody in looked very violent and he looked like he is looking for someone to beat him up, while everyone was in the playground, one boy was shown using a drill doing his work and a close up of a drill is shown.

However they may have been foreshadowing the future, it may be used as a weapon later on. He is then shown getting a bag and hiding it. We are not shown what he is hiding, it may be drugs or it may be weapon, he was putting it away very carefully, so no one can see him put it away.

The opening scene had upbeat music; it had the sound of a drill, you could hear boys and girls talking and swearing in the background, this shows that it is the playground. You could hear these two guys inviting girls to a party because the parents are out of town; this shows that teenagers act in a negative way behind their parents back.

There are a lot of jump shots, this conveys the movie will be a upbeat movie, the jump shots also show the amount of things that happen in the playground because they jump from one shot to another because theirs a lot happening. There are a lot of focused and unfocused shots. This may have been used to show how unfocused teenagers can be. the film starts off with disequilibrium with all the slow motion, unloosing camera, jump cuts and panning in the opening sequence.  in the film opening their are  lot of fast pam, they used this to introduce all the characters
